What to expect at Al Wathba Wetland Reserve

Al Wathba Wetland Reserve is a protected landscape of lakes, salt-flat terrain and varied wildlife.

The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) describes it as the emirate’s first area protected by law, established by the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. The reserve was designated a Ramsar site on 25 April 2013 and added to the IUCN Green List in 2018, the first site in the region to receive that recognition.

Once a coastal salt flat known as a sabkha, the area now includes natural and man-made lakes. The reserve has more than 250 bird species, 37 plant species and aquatic life. In autumn and spring, it can support as many as 4,000 Greater Flamingos, making those seasons a notable time for birdlife.

From Abu Dhabi city centre, the reserve is about a 30-minute drive via E22 and E30 Abu Dhabi–Al Ain Truck Road.

Follow E22, connect to E30 Abu Dhabi–Al Ain Truck Road, then follow signs for the reserve. If you’re putting together a wider city visit, the route can fit alongside plans in a one-day Abu Dhabi itinerary. The airport-to-resort route can also help with journey planning.

The reserve is about 23.5 km from Andalus Al Seef Resort & Spa, a resort near Al Wathba Wetland Reserve, making it possible to pair a wetland visit with a stay in Abu Dhabi.

What trails and wildlife viewing are available?

What trails and wildlife viewing are available?

Two self-guided walking trails, 1.5 km and 3 km long, run through the reserve, and a bird-watching hide offers a place to watch birds.

You can choose a trail length to suit the time you have, then use the hide for bird-watching. Greater Flamingos are present in particularly large numbers in autumn and spring; wildlife sightings can vary, so treat the reported peak as a seasonal pattern rather than a guarantee.
